TRIGGER WARNING: Gender-Based Violence

On a fateful day, I attended a community training in my village that aimed at helping us (women) to lift ourselves and our households out of poverty. The class usually started at 10am and lasted until noon, but this day it started an hour late, causing me to return home later than expected. When I arrived, I discovered that my husband was furious and upset because lunch was delayed. Instead of enquiring about my well-being or trying to find out why I was delayed, he resorted to physical violence, hurling abusive words, and accusing me of being dishonest about attending the training.

This incident was the first of its kind for me, and it left me feeling ashamed, victimized, and deeply distrusted. I hadn't engaged in any wrongdoing - I was committed to attending the training that aimed to uplift our family's well-being. It made me look weak among my peers and neighbors.

When my husband assaulted me, he hit my face so badly with slaps. It disorganised my skin and my ears were so affected that up to this time, I still can't hear properly even after treatment. As a woman, I don't feel confident anymore because of the scars and bruises on my face.

The first person I confided in regarding the incident was our community trainer. He took the initiative to approach my husband, offering counsel and assuring him that the training was meant to enhance not only my life but our entire family's livelihood. My husband listened and, for a brief period, exhibited positive changes. However, he unexpectedly resumed physically abusing me over minor issues. I then decided to seek help from the local council leaders, who summoned him for counseling.

I always try to brush off the pain by going to the garden and keeping myself busy with house chores. I forgave my husband since he has changed now.

I urge anyone experiencing a situation like mine, enduring abuse from a partner, family member, or anyone else, not to suffer in silence. Speak up! You have the option to report to the authorities and seek assistance and support from civil society organizations that are available to help when needed. When you receive counseling, please be attentive and take action based on the advice provided; it can genuinely help improve your circumstances.
