Reflecting on 2023

2023 has proven to be a trying year for me on both personal and professional fronts. The overwhelming emotions of frustration, demotivation, grief and sadness have far too often consumed me, largely due to the brutal oppression suffered by my compatriots and the suppression of protests undertaken by people seeking autonomy and basic human rights.

The lack of unity within the Iranian diaspora's fight for freedom has diverted attention away from the core issue. The disillusionment arising from Western governments, which claim moral righteousness by condemning oppressors while at the same time continuing business as usual in a way that will sustain them for years to come, is deeply disheartening. And of course the eruption of a war that has polarised the world. Many people across the world are left feeling perplexed by the double standards of the West for allowing such injustice and devastating tragedy to unfold in Palestine and Israel. I mourn with those who have suffered the loss of loved ones, enduring the heavy weight of grief. My deepest hope is that they find solace within their hearts.

Nonetheless, throughout the year, there have been moments that filled me with an immense sense of pride and joy, particularly when I reflected upon the impact of the projects we've dedicated ourselves to. Even on those days when hope seemed to slip away, I turned to history and literature as a source of inspiration, reminding myself that in the darkest of times, compassion has a way of prevailing.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my team and our circle of creatives. You have sustained me, undeterred by the obstacles and challenges we encountered. Your presence and support served as a source of inspiration, reviving my optimism and reminding me that even in the darkest moments, there are individuals who can persevere and light the way ahead. Your unwavering encouragement and belief in the organisation were invaluable, and I will forever cherish the impact you've had on me in these trying times.

I also extend my appreciation to our partners, who served as a constant source of motivation during those moments when the path ahead seemed devoid of light. Evoca would not exist without you. Your determination and hard work serve as the driving force that inspires us to pursue our endeavours within the organisation with motivation and dedication.

My admiration goes to the individuals worldwide who courageously speak their truth, even in the face of being silenced or terminated. Profound respect and appreciation for the activists and journalists who, at great personal risk, tirelessly unveil the truths that need to be exposed.

As we approach the holiday season, I urge each one of us to take a moment for introspection, contemplating our values and the compassion we extend to one another. It is our interconnectedness and humanity that holds the potential to guide us through these challenging times, driven by our shared desire for a brighter world for generations to come.

We are capable of more, and we are called to do better. We need to recognise that maintaining the status quo may lead to the destruction of humanity rather than its ascension. I implore us to seek change and progress. My prayers are for the arrival of brighter days, where compassion, unity, and a commitment to a better world will prevail.
